Tourism in Turkey has a huge variety of destinations such as historic sites, archaeological zones, but also numerous seaside resort along the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean. The many cultures that the country has experienced throughout its history and the very favorable climate gives a major advantage for Turkey in tourism. Istanbul is the most visited city in Turkey with over 7 million tourists in 2008. Split by the Bosphorus, Istanbul is the only city in the world straddling two continents. Having been the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire, the historic buildings are particularly important among which one can find the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Dolmabahçe Palace, Topkapı Palace, Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, the Pera Palas, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Hippodrome of Constantinople.
The city was also chosen as the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2010.
